Climate Justice Ambassador at Oxford Climate Journalism Network (OCJN) launches climate education

Climate change issues have been shaking up countries worldwide, but Cameroon is among the least concerned about this. The coverage of the country’s mass media on this issue and other environmental problems, in general, occupies only a small proportion of total media reports regardless of the fact that Cameroon is facing some serious environmental problems, such as deforestation, hazedisaster, drought, floods. .

The issue of climate change is not a significant concern of mass media in Cameroon. Climate Change and Environment journalism is less popular than corruption, terrorism, elections, economic disparities, internally displaced persons, refugee problems, sports, and even the lives of celebrities. Images of mass media in Cameroon which is dominated by television viewers and newspaper readers have not put the issue of the environment and climate change as the main agenda of the media.

This has trigger the executive director and founder of Cameroon climate Journalism Network –(CCJN), as Climate Justice Ambassador at Oxford Climate Journalism Network (OCJN) to appeal the government of Cameroon to bring climate education to schools and be inserted into curriculum. Mr. Tamuukong Roland did not missed words on the urgent demand pause by climate and environmental changes and the future mother earth. Lunching the event which will go nationwide took off at the regional college of agriculture Bambili, appealed to the director to take initiative and start up climate education for these agricultural engineers being trained at the country’s top school.

The Cameroon Climate Journalism Network (CCJN) and Climate Justice Ambassador at Oxford Climate Journalism Network Climate action should take center stage in all our discussions”, he re-iterated!

(OCJN) called on environmental volunteers to encourage and build echo-friendly communities and the media men and women should put climate question at the top of their priority and top national news at all time. “Climate action should take center stage in all our discussions”, he re-iterated!

This climate demand action is urgent for the government of Cameroon to take action and let our schools take up lesions in environmental studies; Climate change is here as evidenced by the environmental disasters that are now regularly visiting our planet. The mass media are reporting these disasters religiously, and the journalists learn as they go along. But the reporting has focused mainly on the toll in human lives and property. This is disaster reporting and it stops short of contextualizing. It does not adequately explain why the environmental disasters are happening more violently and more frequently.
